The Ever-Standing Tree. Te Rakau Tu Tonu by Tim Tipene, Illus. Ani Huia Ligaliga. Pub. Oratia, 2024
Most legends from any culture have a relevance today that perhaps wasn’t so apparent at the time of writing and this is one of them.

This bilingual picture book is a modern interpretation of the classic Maori legend Rata and the Tree. Father wants to cut down a tree because it is spoiling his view. The children don’t want him to do but he does any way. next morning the tree is back up again after nocturnal activity from insects, birds animals.
Father can’t believe it but it happens three nights in a row. He even takes a photograph because he can’t believe what has happened. In the end he decides to leave the tree where it is. A lesson well learned.
Trees are special we need them to survive. Great message.
Both English and Maori text on same and often on opposite pages. Maori words in the English text are translated.
Illustrations are modern and deeply profound. Excellent story for everyone.
